Gamelan Series

Gamelan series is the gathering of my research and point of view in diving into Indonesian music culture that I have been carrying out since 2019.
My first point of entry through various music scenes in the archipelago starts from the island of Java where the Gamelan plays an important role in the society.
The traditional orchestra is rich in sounds and depicts a profound wisdom of togetherness that strengthens a multi ethnic community.
These genuine aspects inspired me to use Gamelan as the symbol of my exploration which ranges from traditional music to death metal and through experimental music.

This mix can be classified as the genres Post Club and Experimental Club. It contains a mixture of dub music, bass music, ambiance music, and Indonesian traditional sounds and instruments from different ethnic groups within the archipelago: Kadire (Dayak), Tarawangsa (Sunda), Jathilan (Jawa), and Gamelan Bali (Bali). There are also modern renditions of a few Southeast Asian electronic music like Jedag-jedug, Koplo, Budots, and Ragatak - also selections of tracks that are enriched with heavy guitar distortions or using natural sounds as part of instruments from the Philippines and Vietnam. Most of the selections of the tracks came from music made by my dear friends and lovers, my acquaintances that inspired me, and some music that I made with my loved ones. Knowing these artists personally and being able to perform with some of them have given me a lot of energy and strong spiritual bond to our own interpretation of traditional sounds, how it came out differently yet equally flourishing to the culture itself from what we absorb across generations. This mix is a contemplation of the things that we have to endure in knockabout from the shift of the world that is seemingly frightening and isolating. I hope these music can stay blasted in alternative spaces under the shady exonerating safe spaces away from surveillance. May we share our power and love intentionally.

Bajak is a project of Simone Vassallo / Lampreda (Drum, percussions, DIY soundbox) and Nanang / Pala Wuni (guitar, DIY instruments). The core of this collaborative work comes from experimentation on self built instrument.

Bajak sails from Indonesian outsider trance ceremony to Sicilian folk celebration and expands until noise rock pub. It is lofi, cheap, raw, untamed but at the same time introspective.

  4. 3. Arrembaggio

Buon ascolto.

We begin this series by listening to the recordings of maestro Suwarno's Gamelan orchestra, made by me in 2022 in Surabaya,.

To guide you through this episode and give you an understanding, the songs we are going to listen to are sung in Javanese (not to be confused with Indonesian), narrating various life themes and ancient stories, told in a poetic way.

For each piece there will always be an introduction made by the maestro.

Enjoy.
