Un episodio interamente dedicato alla batteria jazz di ricerca e alla sua soprendente musicalità ed espressività. Ascolteremo quasi per intero il disco Independence (1983) dell'olandese Pierre Courbois (1940), uno dei più importanti musicisti jazz olandesi. All’inizio degli anni ’60 suonò con Kenny Drew, Jean-Luc Ponty, Eric Dolphy, Ben Webster, Stan Getz e Johnny Griffin.  Nel corso della sua carriera è sempre stato all’avanguardia dei nuovi sviluppi: nel 1961 iniziò a sperimentare con il Free Jazz Quartet, seguito dal Free Music Quintet, e nel 1969 fondò il primo gruppo jazz-rock europeo, Association P.C. Da allora Courbois ha formato diversi ensemble, collaborando sia con grandi nomi che con giovani talenti della scena jazz europea.  Le uultime due tracce provengono invece dal disco Drum Talk di Susie Ibarra e Denis Charles, del 1996, un disco che unisce i rappresentanti di due generazioni di percussionisti americani jazz, di ricerca, essendo la Ibarra nata nel 1970 e Denis Charles nel 1933. Entrambi però hanno percorso le strade del free jazz e dell'avanguardia per cui si inseriscono senza sbalzi nel flusso sonoro di questo episodio.

An entire episode dedicated to exploratory jazz drumming and its surprising musicality and expressiveness.  We will listen to almost the entire album Independence (1983) by the Dutch drummer Pierre Courbois (born 1940), one of the most important Dutch jazz musicians. In the early 1960s he played with Kenny Drew, Jean-Luc Ponty, Eric Dolphy, Ben Webster, Stan Getz and Johnny Griffin.  Throughout his career he has always been at the forefront of new developments: in 1961 he began experimenting with the Free Jazz Quartet, followed by the Free Music Quintet, and in 1969 he founded the first European jazz-rock group, Association P.C., which won the Down Beat poll.  Since then, Courbois has formed several ensembles, collaborating with both great names and young talents from the European jazz scene.  The last two tracks, however, come from the album Drum Talk by Susie Ibarra and Denis Charles (1996), a recording that brings together representatives of two generations of American jazz percussionists (Ibarra was born in 1970 and Denis Charles in 1933). Both, however, have followed paths of exploration, free jazz and the avant-garde, and I think they fit seamlessly into the sonic flow of this episode.

The Aerial era una piccola label che si autodefiniva giornale sonoro e che, nei primi anni novanta, produsse una serie di compilation dove venivano presentata una vasta gamma di artisti sperimentali con suoni e linguaggi provenienti da tutto il mondo. The Aerial era una delle tante label create da veri e propri innamorati del suono che però non ha avuto una vita molto lunga, lanciandoci un totale di 6 compilation che rappresentano alla perfezione il mood di questa seconda stagione di Plunkett's Letter. Al loro interno infatti si contemplano improvvisazione, classica contemporanea, free jazz ed elettronica sperimentale.  Le compilation numero 3 e numero 4 sono ancora reperibili su archive.org e per questa puntata ascolteremo proprio la numero 3 quasi per intero: un viaggio (ovviamente) assai poco lineare tra fondali di ronzii elettrici, echi e loop di strumenti a fiato, superfici ambientali, pianoforti preparati e glitch angelici. The Aerial was a small label that defined itself as a 'sound journal', and in the early nineties it produced a series of compilations presenting a wide range of experimental music, with sounds and artistic languages from all over the world. The Aerial was one of many labels created by people deeply in love with sound but it didn’t have a very long life, releasing a total of 6 compilations that perfectly capture the mood of this second season of Plunkett's Letter, encompassing improvisation, contemporary classical, free jazz, and experimental electronics.  Compilations number 3 and number 4 are still available on archive.org, and for this episode we’ll listen to almost the entire number 3: a (naturally) far-from-linear journey through backgrounds of electric drones, echoes and loops of wind instruments, ambient surfaces, prepared pianos, and angelic glitches. La playlist di questa puntata rappresentata un percorso per niente lineare e si srotola lungo un arco temporale piuttosto lungo, dal 1981 al 1997 e consiste di quattro brani di artisti diversissimi tra loro che spaziano dall'avantgarde/free jazz all'ambient etereo. Si comincia con un brano di un artista misteriosissimo, tal Jason Michaels, il cui unico disco del 1981, Crystalization of the Mind, da cui ascolteremo la titletrack, è stato definito "jazz apocalittico"; si prosegue poi con circa dieci minuti di ambient di squisita fattura dicui è autore unico un artista ancora più criptico e sconosciuto, PQ (Paul Quigley) che, stando a quanto si legge in archive.org, dovrebbe aver registrato questo suo brano nel 1982, trattando con effetti in tempo reale materiale sonoro proveniente da trasmissioni radio, con risultati francamente strabilianti per l'epoca; il terzo brano è invece tratto da un disco del 1986 dei non proprio notissimi musicisti tedeschi Paul Schwarz e Bernd Konrad, rispettivamente pianista e sassofonisti, autori di un flusso sonoro suadente e ipnotico che non si potrebbe definire altrimenti che "jazz ambient" e che, per fortuna, non ha niente a che vedere con la musica da cocktail o da massaggio yoga a cui l'accostamento dei due termini può richiamare oggigiorno; l'ora di Plunkett's Letter si chiude poi con 25 minuti di puro godimento sonoro ad opera del Nels Cline Trio che il 18 gennaio 1997 presso l'Alligator Lounge di Santa Monica, California, dedica questa improvvisazione per flauto, chitarra elettrica, basso e batteria a Martin Luther King, nel giorno dedicato alla sua memoria. E anche qui siamo di fronte a un flusso sonoro dove si ritrovano elementi ambient e jazz, ma anche noise, e dove la sperimentazione è decisamente più spinta e avventurosa rispetto a quanto ascoltato nei brani precedenti: un brano che si apre quasi in sordina per poi esplodere in un caos di bellezza luminosa. Clinical Archives è una netlabel ormai inattiva da oltre dieci anni. L'ultima release risale al 2014. Parte del suo archivio è ancora miracolasamente online, grazie alla solita lungimiranza di archive.org (un sito che per chi sa cercare è fonte di gioie inesauribili) che ne ospita i file. Così chi ha voglia di ascoltare musica senza compromessi e confini, di ricerca, libera, avventurosa, sperimentale, con una tendenza al jazz passando dalla musica elettronica, ambient, concreta, avrà sicuramente materiale con sui carezzare i propri padiglioni auricolari. In questa puntata vengono presentati alcuni brani tratti dai primi due cd della monumentale compilation riepilogativa intitolata semplicemente Clinical Jazz, composta da 9 cd e ancora tutta reperibile online, royalty free e in ottima qualità (mp3 320kbps). So anyone who wants to listen to uncompromising, boundary‑free music—research‑driven, free, adventurous, experimental, with a tendency toward jazz while passing through electronic, ambient, and musique concrète—will certainly find plenty of material to caress their eardrums.In this episode, we present a few tracks taken from the first two CDs of the monumental retrospective compilation simply titled Clinical Jazz, consisting of nine CDs, still entirely available online, royalty‑free and in excellent quality (320kbps mp3). Per questa puntata si va dalle parti del free jazz e dell'avanguardia, ascoltando per intero un concerto (registrato nel 1970) del grande alto-sassofonista Marion Brown (1931-2010), che ha fatto della ricerca una vera e propria cifra stilistica. Il suo stile, lirico, poetico e meno aggressivo rispetto ad altri musicisti dell'avanguardia dello stesso periodo, lo ha reso una voce diversa e cristallina, riconoscibilissima: una voce che ci parla ancora oggi con eloquenza, dolcezza e mistero. Per completare i restanti minuti della puntata due brani tratti da un disco di free jazz misteriosissimo, uscito nel 1967, a firma di una band di cui non si trova niente altro, The Fourth Stream. Un disco che si inquadra prefettamente nel ribollente clima delle avanguardie jazz di fine anni Sessanta, quando il jazz cominciò ad abbandonare le forme tradizionali per contaminarsi e sperimentare, partendo per un viaggio mai concluso verso lidi ignoti e puntando in alto, oltre il cielo, prendendo idealmente come punto di partenza il monumentale Ascension di John Coltrane (1965), disco nel quale, non a caso, proprio Marion Brown ha suonato.

For this episode we delve into the realms of free jazz and the avant-garde, listening in full to a concert (recorded in 1970) by the great alto saxophonist Marion Brown (1931–2010), who made research itself a true hallmark of his style. His approach—lyrical, poetic, and less aggressive compared to other avant-garde musicians of the same period—made him a distinct and crystalline voice, instantly recognizable: a voice that still speaks to us today with eloquence, gentleness, and mystery. To fill the remaining minutes of the episode, two tracks from a profoundly mysterious free jazz album released in 1967, credited to a band about which almost nothing else can be found: The Fourth Stream. The record fits perfectly into the boiling climate of late-1960s jazz avant-gardes, when jazz began to abandon traditional forms to contaminate and experiment, embarking on an never-ending journey toward unknown shores and aiming high, beyond the sky—ideally taking as its starting point the monumental Ascension by John Coltrane (1965), an album in which, not coincidentally, Marion Brown himself played,

Per questa puntata il flusso sonoro diventa un melange di jazz, elettronica, improvvisazione e riciclo di materiali sonori disparati: vecchi vinili, cassette, field recordings. Con la tecnica del collage sonoro lavora infatti Desmond Hollins aka Ceptual, nel suo seminale lavoro Shifts Personal (2006), da cui ascolteremo quattro brani: un disco costruito meticolosamente frammento dopo frammento, che assume toni elegiaci e nostalgici e vive di un tocco davvero profondo e delicato. La modalità operativa di Ceptual è alla base anche dell'operato della Perry Ferya Band, autori del secondo disco in ascolto in questa puntata, Back Out (2011), dove però i materiali riciclati e rimessi in circolo provengono da registrazioni della stessa band e servono da ossatura per improvvisazioni con strumenti reali: siamo anche qui in una zona di rarefazione, immersi in un'atmosfera calda e malinconica; insomma, dalle parti della bellezza.

Test Type Trio: un mistero sepolto nel mare digitale: così si potrebbe intitolare un ipotetico articolo dedicato a questo quartetto di Minneapolis a cui è dedicata questa puntata di Plunkett's Letter. Già il fatto di essere un quartetto e di includere la parola Trio nel nome è piuttosto curioso. Ma la cosa ancora più curiosa è che musica di questa qualità sia passata del tutto inosservata e che i quattro dischi che il quartetto ha realizzato giacciano inascoltati tra una pagina bandcamp e qualche entries di archive.org da oltre venti anni. Ma la loro musica è perfetta per il taglio che la trasmissione sta prendendo perché include quegli elementi che mi fanno vibrare il cuore e la mente da un po' di tempo a questa parte, ovvero jazz libero e avventuroso unito a suoni elettronici altrettanto liberi e avventurosi. Dei Test Type Trio ascolteremo quindi due brani dal disco Chemical Jazz (2002) e, per intero, il disco Crack the Bends (2004). Il mondo è pieno di ottima musica, basta saperla riconoscere e verrà da te spontaneamente, proprio quella di cui hai bisogno.

Sumerki + è un disco dove convivono blues e jazz in una forma minimale e scarna, sperimentale, evocativa, a tratti spettrale. Un disco sconosciuto, di un artista sconociuto in cui mi sono imbattuto quasi per caso, facendo ricerche in quel mare magnum di tesori che è archive.org. Un disco perfetto per Plunkett's Letter, senza compromessi, intriso di bellezza, al quale ho deciso di dedicare l'intera ora della trasmissione. Di Evgeny Konovalov in rete si trovano pochissime notizie, perché cercando il suo nome ci si imbatte in almeno due omonimi molto più conosciuti, uno è un ballerino, l'altro un cantante. Del Konovalov di Sumerki +  si sa solo che è nato nel 1947 a Grodno in Bielorussia, che negli anni Settanta ha fatto parte di alcune band, tra cui una chiamata Husljary, che dalla fine degli anni Novanta ha suonato in jam sessions allo Star Club di Minsk e che negli anni Duemila sono usciti un paio di album per la netlabel bielorussa Haze, ormai inattiva da un decennio.

In questa puntata ascolteremo due dischi: Cronophagie di Jacques Lasry e Early Fall dei Fall Mountain. Cronophagie è un album del compositore e percussionista francese Jacques Lasry (1917-2004), pubblicato nel 1969. Lasry, insieme a sua moglie Yvonne Lasry, era membro del gruppo Structures Sonores Lasry-Baschet, pionieri nell’uso di sculture sonore metalliche e cristalli inventati da François e Bernard Baschet. Questi strumenti producono timbri eterei, metallici, quasi "extraterrestri" che testimoniano un periodo di transizione verso un approccio meno estremo allo sperimentalismo degli anni ’60 (musique concrète, serialismo, free jazz), un approccio più accessibile ma ancora innovativo, spesso rivolto a un pubblico colto ma non accademico. Early Fall è invece un disco del 1979, devoto alla sperimentazione più libera, che unisce quelle due anime che, dagli anni '70 in poi, troveranno sempre più terreno fertile per icontrarsi, ibridarsi e dare vita a forme sonore mai pensate prima, ovvero l'elettronica, rappresentata in questo disco dagli electronics di Bob Ostertag e il free jazz, degnamente rappresentato qui dai sax di Ned Rotherberg e dai violini di Jim Katzin, con l'aggiunta del piano di Richard Rogers (tracce 5-8).

Quando il jazz più libero e sperimentale incontra l'elettronica tutto può succedere e capita di ritrovarsi persi nello spazio profondo, cento anni nel futuro, e all'improvviso precipitare nella New Orleans di fine Ottocento. In questa puntata ascolteremo due dischi a loro modo estremi. In Borderline (2009), di Sandro Marinoni, infatti, la rarefazione è la cifra principale, con brani affidati soltanto a un sax e a un sottofondo elettronico discreto, per un disco sommamente evocativo e poetico, dove ovviamente il silenzio conta quanto gli spazi riempiti dal suono. In Opus Oratorium (2016) di Marrach / Bad Poet / Chtin Mara, invece, ogni spazio è riempito e saturato da schegge e frammenti di suoni e parole che si infrangono e si ricompongono in brani in cui l'elemento jazz è indubbiamente presente ma immerso in un caleidoscopio di altri suggerimenti che vanno dall'elettronica sperimentale all'hip-hop più raffinato.

Siamo nel 1971 e il jazz ormai si è evoluto in una forma senza confini, contaminandosi con suoni e strumenti elettrici ed elettronici, seguendo a ruota il solco tracciato da Bitches' Brew di Miles Davis(1970). Ecco dunque una playlist con musicisti legati a doppio filo a Miles, il grande batterista Tony Williams, proveniente proprio dal quintetto di Miles, con il suo progetto Lifetime e il bellissimo disco Ego, e Freddie Hubbard, straordinario trombettista che ha suonato praticamente con tutti i collaboratori di Miles, che nel 1971 realizza un disco ambizioso e affascinante insieme al musicista sperimentale turco Ilhan Mimaroglu.

Nebulosa: oggetto celeste, dall’aspetto diffuso, simile a una piccola nube, costituito da gas (neutro o ionizzato) e polveri. Tradizionalmente le nebulose si distinguono in nebulose brillanti e nebulose oscure, a seconda che appaiano come sorgenti di luminosità diffusa o come macchie scure; la natura dei due tipi di nebulose è, tuttavia, la stessa. Le nebulose brillanti devono la loro luminosità alla vicinanza di stelle; vengono suddivise, a loro volta, in nebulose a riflessione (o nebulose diffuse lucide), che si limitano a diffondere la luce della stella che le illumina e nebulose a emissione, che assorbono la radiazione della stella e la riemettono a lunghezze d’onda diverse. Le nebulose oscure vengono messe in evidenza dall’apparente mancanza di stelle in una zona del cielo: esse, infatti, si interpongono fra l’osservatore e le stelle di sfondo, oscurandole. Questo tipo di classificazione, basata soltanto sulle caratteristiche osservative delle nubi di gas e polvere, tende a essere sostituito da una descrizione che distingue le concentrazioni di materia interstellare in regioni HI, nubi molecolari e regioni HII (➔ gas) [Fonte: Enciclopedia Treccani]

Con una simile descrizione era piuttosto scontato che il concetto stesso di nebulosa abbia rappresentato un nucleo potente di ispirazione per musicisti e artisti di ogni genere, anche se, va detto, una tematica così eminentemente cosmica e scientifica è da sempre tradizionalmente associata alle innumerevoli ramificazioni della musica elettronica e sperimentale di matrice ambient; ma direi che anche dalle parti del jazz e dell'improvvisazione più avventurosa e futuristica le nebulose siano ben rappresentate. Ed è un po' questo ciò che troverete in questa playlist, ovvero elettronica sperimentale che incontra strumenti acustici tipicamente jazz, come il sax, il contrabbasso e il pianoforte, con un tocco di noise e di drone music. Nebula: a celestial object with a diffuse appearance, resembling a small cloud, composed of gas (neutral or ionized) and dust. Traditionally, nebulae are distinguished into bright nebulae and dark nebulae, depending on whether they appear as sources of diffuse luminosity or as dark patches; however, the nature of the two types of nebulae is fundamentally the same. Bright nebulae owe their luminosity to the proximity of stars; they are further subdivided into reflection nebulae (or glossy diffuse nebulae), which merely scatter the light of the star illuminating them, and emission nebulae, which absorb the star’s radiation and re-emit it at different wavelengths. Dark nebulae are highlighted by an apparent absence of stars in a region of the sky: they position themselves between the observer and the background stars, obscuring them. This type of classification, based solely on the observational characteristics of gas and dust clouds, is increasingly being replaced by a description that distinguishes concentrations of interstellar matter into HI regions, molecular clouds, and HII regions (➔ gas) [Source: Treccani Encyclopedia].

With such a description, it was rather predictable that the very concept of a nebula would serve as a powerful core of inspiration for musicians and artists of all kinds. That said, a theme so inherently cosmic and scientific has traditionally been associated with the countless branches of electronic and experimental ambient music; however, I’d say that nebulae are well represented even in the realms of jazz and the more adventurous, futuristic forms of improvisation. And that’s more or less what you’ll find in this playlist: experimental electronics touched by incursions of acoustic instruments typically associated with jazz, like the saxophone the double bass and the piano, with a dash of noise and drone music. Le costellazioni dell'Orsa Maggiore e dell'Orsa Minore, con il loro simbolismo celeste e la Stella Polare come guida, hanno ispirato musicisti di vari generi. La loro natura circumpolare, che le rende visibili per tutto l'anno, evoca eternità e infinito e si riflette nelle atmosfere eteree e spaziali tipiche dell'ambient e dell'elettronica sperimentale, ma non solo. In questa playlist trovano quindi spazio brani realizzati nell'ultimo quarto di secolo da artisti prevalentemente oscuri e undergound, con una preponderanza di tonalità ambient ma senza tralasciare spazi di improvvisazione che si avvicinano al post-rock.

The constellations of Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, with their celestial symbolism and the North Star as a guide, have inspired musicians across various genres. Their circumpolar nature, making them visible year-round, evokes eternity and infinity, reflected in the ethereal and spatial atmospheres typical of ambient and experimental electronica, but not exclusively. This playlist thus features tracks from the last quarter-century, created by mostly obscure and underground artists, with a predominance of ambient tones, while still leaving room for free improvisation and post-rock nuances.

Sirio, conosciuta anche come la "Stella del Cane", è la stella più luminosa del cielo notturno, visibile nella costellazione del Cane Maggiore. È una stella binaria, composta da Sirio A, una stella bianco-azzurra della sequenza principale, e Sirio B, una nana bianca, molto più debole e difficile da osservare. La sua straordinaria brillantezza, con una magnitudine apparente di -1,46, è dovuta sia alla sua luminosità effettiva sia alla relativa vicinanza alla Terra: si trova a circa 8,6 anni luce da noi, rendendola una delle stelle più vicine al nostro sistema solare.

Il nome "Sirio" deriva dal greco antico "Seirios", che significa "ardente" o "scintillante", un nome perfetto per una stella che cattura l’attenzione con il suo splendore. Nella mitologia greca, Sirio era associata al cane di Orione, il cacciatore, e si diceva quando sorge poco prima dell’alba segnasse l’inizio delle calde "giornate del cane" estive, la cosiddetta "canicola". Gli antichi Egizi, invece, la veneravano come Sothis, legandola al ciclo del Nilo: il suo sorgere annunciava la piena annuale, un evento vitale per la loro civiltà.

Dal punto di vista storico-astronomico, Sirio ha affascinato osservatori per millenni. Gli Egizi la usarono per calibrare il loro calendario, mentre nel XIX secolo gli astronomi moderni scoprirono la sua natura binaria grazie alle oscillazioni di Sirio A, causate dalla gravità della compagna invisibile Sirio B, confermata poi nel 1862. Questa scoperta fu un trionfo della scienza dimostrando l’esistenza di stelle "invisibili" come le nane bianche.

E, ovviamente, Sirio continua a ispirare musicisti e artisti di ogni epoca. La sua luce intensa e misteriosa ha un grande potere evocativo. Per i poeti, è stata un simbolo di guida e eternità; per i musicisti, ha rappresentato un ponte tra il cosmico e l’umano, un suono celeste che trascende il tempo. La sua presenza costante nel cielo, visibile da ogni angolo del pianeta, la rende un’icona universale, un richiamo all’infinito che stimola la creatività. Da Dante, che la cita nella "Divina Commedia", ai compositori contemporanei che spaziano dalla musica elettronica all'improvvisazione jazz, Sirio rimane una fonte di ispirazione primaria.

Per questa ottava puntata della trasmissione la playlist che Plunkett's Letter dedica a Sirio si sposta verso l'improvvisazione jazz, in forme decisamente sperimentali, con una componente elettronica discreta e minima. Solo due dischi da cui attingere, ma sarà un'ora intensa, passando attraverso la magmatica improvvisazione totale di Ernesto Diaz-Infante e Rotcod Zzaj nel loro "ZP-34 Sirius Intrigues" (2003), per poi atterrare con "Sirius Calling" dell'Art Ensemble Of Chicago (2004).

Sirius, also known as the 'Dog Star,' is the brightest star in the night sky, visible in the constellation Canis Major. It is a binary star system, consisting of Sirius A, a blue-white main-sequence star, and Sirius B, a white dwarf that is much fainter and harder to observe. Its extraordinary brilliance, with an apparent magnitude of -1.46, owes itself both to its intrinsic luminosity and its relative proximity to Earth: it lies about 8.6 light-years away, making it one of the closest stars to our solar system.

This breakthrough was a triumph for science, proving the existence of 'invisible' stars like white dwarfs.

And, of course, Sirius continues to inspire musicians and artists across the ages. Its intense and mysterious light holds great evocative power. For poets, it has been a symbol of guidance and eternity; for musicians, it has represented a bridge between the cosmic and the human—a celestial sound transcending time. Its constant presence in the sky, visible from every corner of the planet, makes it a universal icon, a call to the infinite that sparks creativity. From Dante, who mentions it in the Divine Comedy, to contemporary composers spanning electronic music and jazz improvisation, Sirius remains a primary source of inspiration.

For this eighth episode of the broadcast, the playlist that Plunkett's Letter dedicates to Sirius shifts toward jazz improvisation, in decidedly experimental forms, with a discreet and minimal electronic component. Only two albums to draw from, but it will be an intense hour, moving through the magmatic total improvisation of Ernesto Diaz-Infante and Rotcod Zzaj in their 'ZP-34 Sirius Intrigues' (2003), before landing with 'Sirius Calling' by the Art Ensemble of Chicago (2004).

Andromeda, la mitologica fanciulla salvata e amata da Perseo, è anche il nome della costellazione omonima ed è soprattutto il nome con qui è conosciuta l'unica galassia osservabile a occhio nudo nei cieli stellati dell'emisfero occidentale (in condizioni di scarso o nullo inquinamento luminoso, ovviamente), che in quella costellazione si trova. Al solo pronunciarlo prendono forma visioni fantascientifiche di invasioni aliene, distanze siderali, mondi sconosciuti. Questa colonizzazione del nostro immaginario collettivo credo derivi in buona parte dai ricordi dello sceneggiato A come Andromeda (da un romanzo di Fred Hoyle), andato in onda sulla RAI nel 1972 (ma rifacimento di una serie americana del 1961), oltre che dal film The Andromeda Strain, del 1971, tratto da un romanzo di Michael Crichton. Con suggestioni che vanno dalla mitologia alla cinematografia era scontato quindi che il nome di Andromeda fosse di ispirazione anche per musicisti di ogni genere e periodo, passando dalla classica contemporanea per finire al noise più estremo. La playlist che ho messo insieme riflette dunque una parte di questa ispirazione e si colloca in un arco temporale che va dal 1966 al 1986, presentando brani in cui l'elettronica sperimentale tendente all'ambient è preponderante, senza però tralasciare tocchi di psichedelia, progressive e jazz. Andromeda, the mythical maiden saved and loved by Perseus, is also the name of the homonymous constellation and, above all, the name by which the only galaxy visible to the naked eye in the starry skies of the Western Hemisphere (under conditions of little or no light pollution, of course) is known, which is located in that constellation. Just pronouncing it brings to mind sci-fi visions of alien invasions, stellar distances, and unknown worlds. I believe this colonization of our collective imagination largely stems from the memories of the TV series A for Andromeda (based on a novel by Fred Hoyle), aired on RAI in 1972 (but a remake of an American series from 1961), as well as from the 1971 film The Andromeda Strain, based on a novel by Michael Crichton. With inspirations ranging from mythology to cinema, it was therefore inevitable that the name Andromeda would also inspire musicians of every genre and period, spanning from contemporary classical to the most extreme noise. The playlist I have put together reflects a part of this inspiration and covers a time span from 1966 to 1986, featuring tracks where experimental electronics leaning towards ambient are predominant, with touches of psychedelia, progressive and jazz.
