Abstrakt is a programme exploring the many forms of abstraction through the most radical and experimental expressions of contemporary music: from the sparse atmospheres of minimal black metal to algorithmic composition, from stripped-down electronics to music emerging from artificial intelligence systems.
A space dedicated to investigating music’s immaterial dimension—beyond genre—focusing on creative processes, generative systems, and the new frontiers of sonic abstraction.
A platform for exploring how technology, mathematics, and artistic intuition converge in the creation of soundscapes that challenge traditional conventions and open up new possibilities for listening and perception.

The first season of Abstrakt concludes with a shameless moment of self-promotion, though fortunately one that remains closely tied to the show's themes: we discuss my new release, "Souvenirs d'Été," which came out on June 21st and is dedicated to reconstructing last summer through reworked field recordings and distinctly abstract atmospheres, forming a kind of intimate yet open sonic diary. The album is presented in its entirety following an introductory conversation in which I discuss the genesis of the tracks and explain why, free plug aside, its soundscapes fit squarely within the concept of this program.

This episode of Abstrakt consists of a sonic flow of fragments generated entirely through open-source neural networks, using variations of the program’s description as prompts.
A shameless laissez-faire approach applied to composition, with the human relegated to the role of an assistant for editing.
In this episode there is no talking, storytelling, or other kinds of spoken interventions, only a playlist featuring a selection of pieces in which abstraction manifests in the various forms highlighted in previous episodes. The pieces are selected based on personal memories, and represent a very small selection of what led me to approach this kind of musical practice, both as a listener and as a musician.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s "The Art of Fugue" is, paradoxically, one of the most radically abstract works in the history of Western music.
It is not a cycle written for a specific ensemble, it is not conceived for a precise performance context, and in a certain sense it is not even intended for listening in the traditional sense.
It is a conceptual object, a sonic treatise, a generative system ante litteram.
In this sense, it is strikingly close to what we now call algorithmic music, procedural music, or composition guided by formal rules.

An episode dedicated to one of the most abstract offshoots of metal music: black metal.
Black metal, in its original form, has far more in common with the raw simplicity of punk than with the baroque excesses of hard'n'heavy. Rather than pushing heaviness to the extreme (indeed, it is often significantly more melodic than its death, doom, and grindcore cousins), black metal instead reduces the various elements of composition to archetypal motifs, prioritizing their function as symbols over their role as mere sound.
Within the vastness of this black cauldron, a realm so expansive it may well require additional episodes for adequate exploration, we will present selected tracks as "case studies" illustrating how black metal has embraced the many faces of abstraction.

In this episode, we explore how soundscape-based composition creates a bridge between a practice rooted in the most concrete aspects of acoustic experience and a final result that embodies the very essence of abstraction.
Our guest is Giada Turini, who, in addition to being a dear friend and collaborator, is an expert in listening practices and composition centered around soundscapes, approaching her diverse artistic endeavors with passion and dedication. Her radio show on Fango Radio, Diari Sonori, has long delved into these themes, examining their many facets.
Interwoven with fragments of conversation is a themed playlist featuring selected tracks in which the tangibility of the soundscape transforms into pure sonic abstraction.

A brief journey into early industrial music, exploring how abstraction was the silent partner of this movement, influencing it far more than one might think.
Between one brief digression and the next, space is given to a playlist that, as always, is not intended to be a compendium or an introduction for novices, but merely a basket of suggestions and food for thought.

This episode of Abstrakt presents selected excerpts from the conference "Abstracting: From the Continuous to the Discrete", organized by MART, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto, and featuring Robert Zamboni and Valerio Orlandini, moderated by Marina Giaccio.
A conversation exploring the meaning of abstraction, particularly in the context of artificial intelligence and aesthetics, with special attention to music and images. What does abstraction entail? In what ways do neural networks train us after we have trained them? How will the relationship between art, technique, and creativity evolve? These are some of the questions raised in this talk, not in search of answers, but rather to provoke even more questions.
Interspersed among these discussions, edited together without excessive concern for continuity, is a curated soundscape revisiting the various threads of musical abstraction introduced in the first episode.

A journey into a musical genre that has always gone hand in hand with abstraction: dungeon synth, or, as we used to call in the 1990s and 2000s (before the term "dungeon synth" became widespread), "ambient music made by black metal dudes".
In this episode, after a brief introduction aimed at explaining to newcomers what dungeon synth is and why it makes sense to discuss it in this program, we'll present a curated playlist. The selection deliberately avoids the biggest names, sidesteps the temptation to create a "comprehensive guide to dungeon synth" (and instead draws on personal memories), and above all, it steers clear of the American-led revival that has dominated this scene (if it can even be called that) over the past 10-15 years.
Prepare for a wobbly, fragile journey through icy landscapes and clichéd visions of the past, crafted with vintage keyboards and obsolete PC software. Get ready in the most kitschy way possible: light some candles, grab a broadsword and a chainmail tunic, and lose yourself in your own imaginary, unreal frozen medieval world.

What is abstraction? How does it manifest in music?
Abstraction is a mental and creative process that involves stepping away from immediate, concrete, or figurative representations of reality, in order to focus on forms, structures, relationships, symbols, or more universal principles. It is not a departure from truth, but rather a reworking of it: an attempt to grasp the essence of an experience, emotion, or idea by stripping away contingent details.
In this first episode, we’ll explore various ways abstraction can be expressed in musical creation, whether by seeking symbolism through the abandonment of traditional structure or timbre, or by entrusting composition to mathematical models. Music offers countless paths from the concrete to the abstract, from the particular to the universal.
Of course, the possibilities of abstraction go far beyond what’s presented here. In upcoming episodes, we’ll have time to discover more, and to dive deeper into what is only hinted at today.
